PRESS RELEASE
Lifeboat crews warn of inflatable dangers after rescue of two from drifting dinghy
Russell Matthews, 24/6/10

Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) lifeboat crew members at Skegness are today (Thursday) repeating warnings about the dangers of using inflatable dinghies on Lincolnshire’s coast.

The charity’s Inshore Lifeboat (ILB) launched a 12:30 this afternoon following reports of two males being blown out to sea on an inflatable dinghy at Ingoldmells Point, by the strong offshore wind.

Three volunteer crew members onboard the lifeboat reached the dinghy, approximately 200 meters from the beach, within 12 minutes and took both occupants onto the ILB and ashore to waiting Coastguards.

ILB Helmsman Tony Kelly said after the call out, “The two occupants didn’t seem to realise the potential danger they could have been in. Fortunately, and correctly, they stayed inside the dinghy and waited for help to arrive.”

Use of inflatable dinghies at the beach is not recommended, and is particularly dangerous when the wind is blowing offshore. The RNLI provides comprehensive beach safety advice at www.rnli.org.uk/beachsafety
