The Boats

The modern lifeboat is an amazing combination of advanced engineering, high-tech electronic navigation and communication devices, and the latest life-saving equipment. Different types of lifeboat are required for different coastal conditions around the country so the RNLI's fleet has to includes boats capable of launching from beaches, cliffs, slipways as well as those that stay moored up in harbour.

Skegness All-Weather Lifeboats:

Skegness has no harbour for a lifeboat to be left permanently afloat, and nowhere for a slipway, so the boats have to be launched across the beach and off a trailer. Since 1825 when the first lifeboat was put on station at Gibralter Point, the lifeboats of Skegness have been launched by man-power, horses and, more recently, tractors. The current all-weather lifeboat, a 12m Mersey class boat weighs over 14 tons, but still has to be pulled across the beach on a carriage.

Skegness Inshore Lifeboats:

The current inshore lifeboat at Skegness, Leicester Fox II, is a 4.9m (16ft) D class inflatable lifeboat capable of 20knots. Although the ILB is now stationed at Skegness all year, the majority of her launches take place during the summer months when endless missing children and inflatable incidents keep the boat very busy.
